On April 10, 2010, an 80th birthday bash was celeberated in honor of Mr. Shiroor Bhojraj Shetty, retired deputy chief engineer for central railways in India. The party was hosted by his children, Dr. Geeta Shetty, Mr.Bharatraj Shetty and Dr. Anil Shetty. It was well attended by family members and friends to make this milestone event a grand success at Nirvana restaurant in Mississauga, Ontario.

Congratulations to proud parents, Kishor and Dr. Seema Shetty who welcomed baby boy, Rinay. Big sister Raayka is thrilled about the new addition!

It is with great sadness that we report the untimely passing of Shanker K. Shetty (Assistant Commissioner of Police for Mumbai, India) on January 13, 2010. Dhanraj Shetty from Jersey City, NJ, is pleased to announce the graduation of his wife Dr. Reshma Shetty, from the New York University Dental School on May 25th. Dr. Reshma Shetty will begin her dental practice in the tri-state area in August 2010.

We are proud to annouce that Dhevin Gupta, son of Deepak and Shree Gupta (Piscataway, NJ), came in 2nd place for the Northeast Region of the United States Robocop Junior competition. Dhevin, age 11, along with his two teammates built a functioning rescue robot that could navigate through buildings, scan the area for a victim and then deliver the victim to a safe zone. Based on their scores, the team was invited to participate in the World Robocup Jr. competition hosted in Singapore.

Congratulations to Ashvitha and Radhakrishna Shetty of Dayton, NJ, on the birth of their daughter, Ira, on January 27, 2010.

Dr. Vijay and Pallavi Shetty of Brooklyn, NY, celebrated their daughter Aanika's first birthday. A small celebration was held at Aanika's grandparents' house, Sakaram & Gayathri Shetty of New Jersey.

Dr. Dinker and Shakila Rai of Old Westbury, NY celebrated the marriage of their son, Arjun Rai to his high school sweetheart, Holly Holecek on May 29, 2010.

Congratulations to Siddharth & Dr. Seema Poonja who welcomed their first child, Eesha, on May 11, 2010. Grandparents, Dr. Dinker and Shakila Rai were thrilled with their granddaughter's arrival!

It is with the greatest sadness that we report the painful loss of Rohin Hegde. Rohin Hegde passed away April 13, 2010, at the tender age of 6 years old after losing his 2 year battle with Wilm's tumor (kidney cancer). Our community prays for Rohin's parents, Dr. Shura and Mrs. Vasanthi Hegde (Avon Lake, Ohio) as they deal with this devastating loss. The Great Lakes Bunt community and all those that knew Rohin will always keep his memory close to their hearts. BANA extends their heartfelt condolences to Dr. Shura and Mrs. Vasanthi Hegde and the Great Lakes Bunt community.

Vachana, daughter of Dr. Vasanthkumar Hegde and Mrs Vijaya Hegde, was married to Vijayaraghavan on February 4th, 2010, in Udipi, India. Congratulations to the newlyweds.

Congratulations to Shefali Hegde, daughter of Dr. Kirti and the late Ajit Hegde, who has been named one of approximately 560 semifinalists in the 2010 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program. The semifinalists were selected from nearly 3.2 million graduating high school seniors, and more than 3,000 candidates, on the basis of superior achievements, leadership qualities, personal character, and involvement in community and school activities. Inclusion in the Presidential Scholars Program, now in its 46th year, is one of the highest honors to be bestowed on high school students. The Scholars represent excellence in education and the promise of greatness in young people. In honoring the Presidential Scholars, the President of the United States symbolically honors all graduating high school seniors of high potential. We are so proud of Shefali Hegde's incredible accomplishment!

Dr. Sudhakar & Mrs. Prema Shetty (Glen Allen, VA.) are proud to announce the engagement of their daughter, Reshma to Deep Katdare. Deep is a fellow thespian and has starred in "American Desi" and most recently is working as a VP for a mortgage company in New York.

Shreenath and Archana Shetty hosted a surprise party for Satish & Hema Shetty in honor of their 25th wedding anniversary. The happy couple was pleasantly surprised!

Prashanth & Keerthi Shetty, Ujval & Gayatri Alva and Vivek & Geeta Shetty of the Washington D.C. area all welcomed Spring by celebrating the first birthdays of their sons: Siddharth, Ayan, and Netan.

The Washington, D.C. Bunt community participated in the Susan G. Komen Race for Cure on June 5, 2010.

Dhruv & Sonal Bhandary (North Grafton, MA), welcomed a baby girl, Syona on March 14, 2010. Big brothers, Riyyan and Aric are excited about their new little sister. Grandparents, Dayanand & Uma Bhandary (Piscataway, NJ) were thrilled with their first granddaughter!

Drs. Rashmi & Jonah Licht from Providence, RI, welcomed a daughter, Millin Licht, on April 16, 2010. Big brother Samuel (2 years old) is thrilled! Grandparents, Drs. Ravi and Veena Shetty (Long Island, NY) were excited with the arrival of their 4th grandchild.

Dr. B.M. Hegde receives the Padma Bhushan award

The Padma Bhushan award is an Indian civilian decoration established on January 2, 1954, by the Indian president. It stands third in the hierarchy of civilian awards, after the Bharat Ratna and the Padma Vibhushan, but comes before the Padma Shri. It is awarded to recognize distinguished service of a high order to the nation, in any field. As of January 2010, only 1111 people have thus far received the award.

A huge congratulations to Dr. B. M. Hegde, the former vice chancellor of Manipal Academy of Higher Education, in Mangalore, India. Dr. Hegde was presented with Padma Bhushan for his meritorious services in the field of medicine and education. BANA congratulates Dr. Hegde on being the recipient of this distinguished award!
