We are delighted to share that Author and Professor Dr. Sandhya Shetty (NH) has published her latest academic monograph with Palgrave Macmillan in September 2025 - an important scholarly contribution that reflects her continued leadership in the field.

Dr. Sandhya Shetty’s latest monograph, Imperial Pharmakon, published within Palgrave Macmillan’s award-winning series on Literature, Science, and Medicine, offers a richly researched cultural history of Western medicine in British India between 1835 and 1930.
The book traces pivotal developments in dissection, obstetrics and gynecology, public health, and tropical medicine under colonial conditions. Its insights will be of particular interest to the many BANA members in the medical profession, as well as to readers curious about the global-cultural history of medicine and the expanding field
of Medical Humanities.
Although grounded in British Indian contexts, Imperial Pharmakon also carries a notable North American dimension. One chapter highlights the remarkable journey of the first Indian woman to earn an M.D. in Philadelphia in 1887—a story that will especially resonate with South Asian American readers.
We congratulate Dr. Sandhya Shetty on this significant milestone and celebrate her remarkable contributions and cross-cultural understanding.
